SCIENTIFIC WORK BY A PROJECT PHD STUDENT RECOMMENDED BY ACI NEWSLETTER

The American Concrete Institute (ACI) is the world’s leading organization in the field of design and construction of concrete structures, engaged in the development and preparation of standards, technical recommendations and reports, as well as the organization of educational programs. This organization has over 30,000 members in over 120 countries. ACI publishes a monthly e-news, “ACI Concrete SmartBrief,” with highlights for its members in the area of innovation.

In such news, in February 2021, ACI recommended to its members the work of researchers from the Faculty of Civil Engineering, University of Zagreb. The article Non-Destructive Corrosion Inspection of Reinforced Concrete Using Ground-Penetrating Radar: A Review was published in the journal Materials, published by MDPI (ISSN 1996-1944) by Ksenija Tešić, Ana Baričević and Marijana Serdar, employees of the Department of Materials at the Faculty Civil Engineering. The review paper analyzes the advantages and challenges of using ground-penetrating radar to determine the corrosion of reinforcement in concrete in real time.

The article was written as part of the PhD thesis of Ksenija Tešić, a PhD student employed in the project “Autonomous System for Reviewing and Predicting the Integrity of Transport Infrastructure – ASAP”, co-funded by European Regional Development Fund under the Investing in Science and Innovation call. The Faculty of Civil Engineering (GF) of the University of Zagreb is the main beneficiary and coordinator of the project ASAP, which is implemented in cooperation with the partners Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing (FER) and Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Naval Architecture (FSB) of the University of Zagreb. By combining the fields of civil engineering, robotics and computing through the project ASAP, an interdisciplinary core has been created that provides an innovative solution for building maintenance, monitoring and management and is a future strong strategic partner for the public and private sector in modernization.
